Pivotal Moments is the autobiography of Phil Morrison, a Navy Vietnam veteran from Arkansas City, Kansas. He enlisted in 1963, just before his senior year of high school, and by his early twenties had served on cruises aboard aircraft carriers in the western Pacific near Vietnam. The book recounts his upbringing and his service, and it also appeared in a second edition, Pivotal Moments ’64.
At the heart of the story sits a rare piece of firsthand history. Aboard the USS Ticonderoga, Morrison served as plane attendant to Commander James Stockdale. By the account in his book, Morrison was among the first people Stockdale spoke to after his flight on the night of August 4, 1964, during the Gulf of Tonkin events that preceded the escalation of the Vietnam War. Stockdale later endured more than seven years as a prisoner of war, received the Medal of Honor, and in 1992 stood as a vice presidential candidate. A true story this close to a hinge point in American history carries clear cinematic potential.
Morrison’s book had already been published through another publisher, which later ran into legal trouble and left the books out of print. Meanwhile, people kept approaching him about the possibility of a movie.
